OLSIM - Traffic Forecast and Planning using Simulations

Abstract

In this contribution the traffic information system OLSIM is presented. It uses a combination of different kinds of real time traffic data sources like loop detectors, road work messages, and police messages to build a complex view of the current traffic state on the autobahns in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Nevertheless, in such a large network there are, even with numerous data, areas where no information is available. To solve this problem the core of the information system is a microscopic traffic simulator, which also provides reliable traffic information in areas without any measured traffic data. Furthermore, the simulator offers the opportunity to generate 30 and 60 minute traffic forecasts. The results are used in operation and can be accessed at the website www.autobahn.nrw.de.
