The study deals with the Connectionist Theory and its branches, and how this theoretical model can contribute to the speech and language practice. This was aimed to collect and discuss several studies on the Connectionist Theory applied to language acquisition aiming at promoting the reflection on the contributions that this theory may bring out to speech and language therapy. It was found that the studies based on the connectionist theory related to speech and language therapy are prevalent in…

A relação entre o processamento fonológico e a habilidade de leitura: evidência da síndrome de Down e da síndrome de Williams

The present article presents a review of studies which investigated the relationship between phonological processing skills and the ability to read words in two developmental disorders: Down syndrome

Aquisição dos ditongos orais decrescentes: contribuições da teoria da otimidade conexionista

The acquisition of falling oral diphthongs in Brazilian Portuguese was discussed in Bonilha (2000) on the basis of data on 86 cross-sectional subjects in light of standard Optimality Theory (OT) –

Apropriação sociocognitiva da escrita: uma discussão sobre a dimensão intrassubjetiva da linguagem

This study centers its attention on the socio-cognitive appropriation of writing on the basis of vigotskian intersubjectivity concepts, proposing a ressignificance of the concept of intrasubjectivity

The competition model: the input, the context, and the brain

Introduction Language learning is a three-way interaction between the input, the learner, and the interactional context (Bloom, 1974). This three-way interaction provides a general framework for

Simulações conexionistas: a inteligência artificial moderna

During the last two decades, especially after 1986, significant developments in the field of the connectionist paradigm were planned and executed and helped to better understand how mental functions are acquired, stored and, in certain cases, lost.

Using Parallel Distributed Processing Models to Simulate Phonological Dyslexia: The Key Role of Plasticity-related Recovery

This study replicated the original findings and explored the possibility that damage to the phonological portion of the model might produce symptoms of phonological dyslexia, supporting the view that plasticity-related changes should be a significant factor in the understanding of chronic behavioral dissociations.

Using computational, parallel distributed processing networks to model rehabilitation in patients with acquired dyslexia: An initial investigation

This study seeks to demonstrate how a PDP model of acquired dyslexia can be extended to provide a computational framework that is capable of making predictions about the relative effectiveness of therapeutic interventions.

Orthographically mediated inhibition effects: Evidence of activational feedback during visual word recognition

Direct evidence of activational feedback was obtained in the form of orthographically mediated inhibition effects, which are consistent with Activational feedback and support models of visual word recognition that have adopted an interactive activation framework.
