Abstract Introduction: Nutritional rickets has been described from at least 59 countries in the last 20 years. Its spectrum of causes differs in different regions of the world. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of articles on nutritional rickets from various geographical regions published in the last 20 years. We extracted information about the prevalence and causes of rickets. Results: Calcium deficiency is the major cause of rickets in Africa and some parts of tropical Asia, but is…
Nutritional rickets around the world: an update
TLDR
Specific areas which require emphasis include a consistent community approach to screening and diagnosis, vitamin D supplementation of infants and at-risk children, prevention of maternal vitamin D deficiency and the provision of calcium in areas with low calcium diets.

Risk Factor for Nutritional Rickets among 0-5 Years Children in Bangladesh
TLDR
Exclusive breastfeeding for >4 months, sunlight exposure <30 minutes/day, dark skin color, number of siblings, urban slum residence, deficit monthly income, and parent’s education are the risk factors for NR in Bangladeshi child.

TLDR
In situation of low dietary calcium intakes vitamin D requirements may be higher than normal, possibly predisposing those children with vitamin D levels in the low normal range to rickets, it would indicate that the currently accepted normal range for vitamin D sufficiency would need to be adjusted depending on dietary calcium intake.
Vitamin D deficiency and rickets in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia
TLDR
According to this study, apparently healthy children living in areas where rickets is prevalent have risk factors for rickets and a small proportion will have evidence of biochemical rickets.

A systematic review of randomized controlled trials published in medical literature that addresses vitamin D levels and blood pressure was undertaken, finding a statistically significant drop of 2.4 mm in systolic blood pressure among 4 studies.

TLDR
Continuing studies of the etiology of nutritional rickets will provide evidence to underpin guidelines for the prevention and treatment of rickets world-wide, reports from Africa and Asia suggest.
Vitamin D: a growing perspective.
TLDR
The evidence indicates that 5 microg (200 IU)/day of vitamin D has little effect on vitamin D status as measured by the serum 25(OH)D concentration beyond infancy, and two randomized clinical trials show that higher vitamin D intake improves one-year gain in bone density in adolescent girls.

[Symptomatic rickets in adolescents].
TLDR
Rickets affects immigrant adolescents in particular but nevertheless could also present a certain risk period for the general population, and the number of cases is probably under-estimated.
Vitamin D-Deficiency Rickets in Northern Europe and Libya
TLDR
It is difficult to estimate the true prevalence of rickets throughout Norway because the children are rarely brought to the doctor's attention since the lay public believes that they can cure the condition with cod liver oil, according to Johannessen's communication.

TLDR
Nutritional rickets is a current reality in Catalonia and it mainly affects immigrant infants and children from Sub-Saharan Africa and Morocco, black or dark-skinned, fed with maternal milk alone, without vitamin D supplementation and with little sun exposure.
Presentation of vitamin D deficiency
TLDR
Rickets remains a problem in the UK especially in “at risk” ethnic minority groups andSymptomatic hypocalcaemia is an important, but under-recognised presenting feature and growth rate is likely to be an important factor in determining the mode of presentation.
Nutritional vitamin D deficiency rickets in Sudanese children.
TLDR
Nutritional vitamin D deficiency rickets was established in Sudanese children aged from 3 months to 7 years by clinical, radiological and therapeutic response supported by biochemical investigations and possible causes were poor socio-economic background, inadequate dietary intake in both mothers and children, prolonged breastfeeding, prematurity, limited sun exposure and type of residence.
Characteristics of children with florid vitamin D deficient rickets in the Auckland region in 1998.
TLDR
There are a significant number of children in Auckland presenting with florid clinical rickets, mainly of Indian ethnic origin, and strategies are needed to detect children at risk of vitamin D deficiency and supplement them with vitamin D.
Rickets and Vitamin D Deficiency
TLDR
Clinical manifestations of vitamin D deficiency are still seen among “at-risk” populations of children in North America and northern Europe, and cases of rickets are reappearing in former Soviet countries as a result of the recent disorganization of their centralized health care system.
Rickets in the Dairy State.

Vitamin D deficiency nutritional rickets is an important public health problem in Wisconsin and the Wisconsin WIC program may be an important site for intervention strategies.

TLDR
It is revealed that vitamin-D-deficieny rickets is common in Kuwait in spite of abundant sunlight all through the year because children are wrapped up and kept indoors.

TLDR
It is recommended that education regarding AAP guidelines emphasize the higher risk of rickets among young, breast-fed, black children, and that education should also emphasize the importance of weaning children to a diet adequate in both vitamin D and calcium.
