This article reviews our current understanding of how the internal quark structure of a nucleon bound in nuclei differs from that of a free nucleon. We focus on the interpretation of measurements of the EMC effect for valence quarks, a reduction in the Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) cross-section ratios for nuclei relative to deuterium, and its possible connection to nucleon-nucleon Short-Range Correlations (SRC) in nuclei. Our review and new analysis (involving the amplitudes of non-nucleonic…
Probing the core of the strong nuclear interaction
TLDR
High-energy electron scattering measurements that can isolate pairs of nucleons in high-momentum configurations reveal a transition to spin-independent scalar forces at small separation distances, supporting the use of point-like nucleon models to describe dense nuclear systems.

For more than 50 years after the birth of the nuclear shell model, nuclear physics seemed to be spared the trouble of confronting the fundamental issue in nuclear structure: How do the
Modified structure of protons and neutrons in correlated pairs
TLDR
Simultaneous high-precision measurements of the EMC effect and short-range correlated abundances for several nuclei reveal a universal modification of the structure of nucleons in short- range correlated neutron–proton pairs.
From Quarks to Nuclei: Short Range Correlations Studies Across the Globe
Atomic nuclei are made of strongly interacting protons and neutrons (nucleons), which are themselves made of quarks and gluons (partons). One of the overarching goals of modern nuclear physics
Diquark Induced Nucleon-Nucleon Correlations and the EMC Effect.
Diquarks formed from valence quarks across a nucleon-nucleon pair are predicted to affect physical phenomena on vastly different scales, from nuclei to neutron stars. On nuclear distance scales,
Exposing novel quark and gluon effects in nuclei
The fundamental theory of the strong interaction -- quantum chromodynamics (QCD) -- provides the foundational framework with which to describe and understand the key properties of atomic nuclei. A
Searching for three-nucleon short-range correlations
Three nucleon short range correlations~(SRCs) are one of the most elusive structures in nuclei. Their observation and the subsequent study of their internal makeup will have a significant impact on
Exploring the Structure of the Bound Proton with Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering.
TLDR
The first beam spin asymmetry (BSA) measurement of exclusive deeply virtual Compton scattering off a proton bound in ^{4}He is reported, indicating possible medium modification of its partonic structure.

Evidence for strong dominance of proton-neutron correlations in nuclei.
TLDR
The result is the first estimate of the isospin structure of NN-SRCs in nuclei, and may have important implication for modeling the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter.
Realistic model of the nucleon spectral function in few- and many-nucleon systems.
TLDR
Applications of the model to the analysis of inclusive and exclusive processes are presented, illustrating those features of the cross section which are sensitive to that part of the spectral function which is governed by short-range and tensor nucleon-nucleon correlations.

Role of color neutrality in nuclear physics: Modifications of nucleonic wave functions.
TLDR
The influence of the nuclear medium upon the internal structure of a composite nucleon is examined and the effects of color neutrality supply small but significant corrections to predictions of observables.
Detailed study of the nuclear dependence of the EMC effect and short-range correlations
