Post-translational stabilization of beta-catenin through mutation of the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene has been proposed as an early step in colorectal carcinogenesis. Beta-catenin may translocate from the cytoplasm to the nucleus, where it might serve as a transcriptional factor to stimulate tumour formation.
