This issue of Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology celebrates the 10th anniversary of the pioneering 2006 publication reporting the derivation of induced pluripotent stem cells. Earlier work that led in this direction included nuclear transfer experiments in Amphibia and then in mammals (including humans), followed by the derivation of embryonic stem cells and the identification of cell type-determining transcription factors.
