Macrophages play diverse roles in host defense and in maintenance of homeostasis. Based on their ability to promote inflammatory responses, inappropriate macrophage function also contributes to numerous pathological processes, including atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.
