Nuclear small-subunit and partial large-subunit rDNA sequences were determined for the freshwater rhodophyte species Ballia prieurii, from northern Brazil, to assess its relationship to the marine species that have recently been transferred to a new order, Balliales, in the Florideophyceae. Ballia prieurii unequivocally associated with species of the freshwater order Batrachospermales, rather than with the marine Balliales, in all molecular analyses. In addition to habitat, asexual reproduction…
Large subunit rDNA and rbcL gene sequence data place Petrohua bernabei gen. et sp. nov. in the Batrachospermales (Rhodophyta), but do not provide further resolution among taxa in this order
TLDR
The results showed that the new entity with pseudoparenchymatous tube morphology is a member of the Batrachospermales and Petrohua bernabei gen. et sp.
PHYLOGENETIC AFFINITIES OF AUSTRALASIAN SPECIMENS OF BATRACHOSPERMUM (BATRACHOSPERMALES, RHODOPHYTA) INFERRED FROM MOLECULAR AND MORPHOLOGICAL DATA
TLDR
The phylogenetic affinities of fiveAustralasian species of the freshwater red algal genus Batrachospermum were investigated using molecular and morphometric data, and implications for species concepts in these Australasian taxa will be discussed.
SYSTEMATICS OF THE BATRACHOSPERMALES (RHODOPHYTA)—A SYNTHESIS 1
TLDR
This taxonomic synthesis increases the level of monophyly within the Batrachospermales but minimizes taxonomic change where data are still inadequate, resulting in a few relatively conservative taxonomic changes.
Nuclear DNA content variation in the freshwater red algal orders Batrachospermales and Thoreales (Florideophyceae, Nemaliophycidae)
TLDR
Results of this study suggest a possible correlation between polyploidy and the expression of the Batrachospermum or Lemanea morphological phenotypes.
Recognition of Rubrointrusa membranacea gen. et comb. nov., Rhodonematella subimmersa gen. et comb. nov. (with a reinterpretation of the life history) and the Meiodiscaceae fam. nov. within the Palmariales (Rhodophyta)
TLDR
Colaconema subimmersum, consistently grouped with species of Rhodophysema but is divergent from these species in habit, life history, and molecular signature, is proposed as a new monotypic genus Rhodonematella, typified by Rhodon Ematella subimmersa, based on molecular results and new anatomical observations.
Ptilothamnion richardsii (Rhodophyta) is a chantransia stage of Batrachospermum
TLDR
It is argued that it is useful to continue to recognize entities with particular morphological characters and propose the form taxa Chantransia richardsii, C. macrospora and C. pygmaea to be chantransia stages of Batrachospermum taxa.
Diversity of freshwater red algae (Rhodophyta) in Malaysia and Indonesia from morphological and molecular data
TLDR
It is suggested that future focus on freshwater red algae from Southeast Asia will yield considerable knowledge of the flora of the region and freshwater red algal diversity in general.
Vegetative and reproductive morphology of Botryocladia botryoides, B. occidentalis and B. canariensis sp. nov. (Rhodymeniaceae, Rhodophyta) from the Canary Islands
TLDR
The features of the type species B. botryoides are analysed with the aim of delineating a clear boundary between Botryocladia and the next genus Irvinea, and the pattern of growth of the vesicles is suggested as a potentially important diagnostic feature for genus separation.
Taxonomic Revisions of Freshwater Rhodophyta in Recent Years
TLDR
This review examines recent taxonomic revisions or emendations at various taxonomic levels, higher than sections, using molecular as well as morphological information to infer relationship among taxa at variousTaxonomic levels.

Nuclear small-subunit rDNA sequences from Ballia spp. (Rhodophyta): proposal of the Balliales ord. nov., Balliaceae fam. nov., Ballia nana sp. nov. and Inkyuleea gen. nov. (Ceramiales)
TLDR
Nuclear small-subunit rDNA sequences from three species of Ballia native to southern Australia have been investigated, initially to assess the tribal placement of the genus within the Ceramiaceae, but in distance and parsimony analyses, Ballia callitricha was strongly positioned in the ‘two-cap-layered pit-plug assemblage’ of the Florideo-phyceae as a distinct lineage.

A molecular systematic investigation of the Acrochaetiales (Florideophycidae, Rhodophyta) and related taxa based on nuclear small-subunit ribosomal DNA sequence data
TLDR
Small-subunit ribosomal DNA sequences were used to generate phylogenetic trees to determine whether the Acrochaetiales is monophyletic and to assess the relationships of acroCHAetioid algae to closely related taxa.

TLDR
Phylogenetic analyses of the SSU sequences between the Plocamiaceae and members of the Sphaerococcaceae, Phacelocarpaceae, and Nizymeniaceae show SSU differences of between 87 and 105 nucleotides and do not indicate a close relationship.
Morphology and taxonomy of Southern Australian Genera of Crouanieae Schmitz (Ceramiaceae, Rhodophyta)
TLDR
The southern Australian species of the tribe Crouanieae Schmitz (Ceramiaceae) have been studied with particular reference to their taxonomy relationships and it is shown that Hommersand's definition of Antithamnieae must be modified, particularly in reference to procarp development.
A REAPPRAISAL OF GENERIC AND SUBGENERIC CLASSIFICATION IN THE BATRACHOSPERMACEAE (RHODOPHYTA)
TLDR
It is proposed that the three genera Nothocladus, Sirodotia and Tuomeya be reduced to sectional level within Batrachospermum and the genus Batrachespermum become the sole member of the BatrACHospermaceae.
