Novel neutron decay mode inside neutron stars

title={Novel neutron decay mode inside neutron stars},

. We explore the suggestion that the neutron lifetime puzzle might be resolved by neutrons decaying into dark matter through the process, n → χχχ , with χ having a mass one third of that of the neutron. In particular, we examine the consequences of such a decay mode for the properties of neutron stars. Unlike an earlier suggested decay mode, in order to satisfy the constraints on neutron star mass and tidal deformability, there is no need for a strong repulsive force between the dark matter…

Testing Dark Decays of Baryons in Neutron Stars.

The results indicate that neutron stars provide unique and useful probes of GeV-scale dark sectors coupled to the standard model via baryon-number-violating interactions.

Abstract We add to the Standard Model a new fermion χ with minimal baryon number 1/3. Neutron decay n → χχχ into non-relativistic χ can account for the neutron decay anomaly, compatibly with bounds

Neutron stars as dark matter probes

We examine whether the accretion of dark matter onto neutron stars could ever have any visible external effects. Captured dark matter which subsequently annihilates will heat the neutron stars,

Neutron to dark matter decay in neutron stars

Recent proposals have suggested that a previously unknown decay mode of the neutron into a dark matter particle could solve the long lasting measurement problem of the neutron decay width. We show

Consequences of neutron decay inside neutron stars

. The hypothesis that neutrons might decay into dark matter is explored using neutron stars as a testing ground. It is found that in order to obtain stars with masses at the upper end of those

Dark Matter Thermalization in Neutron Stars

We study how many-body effects alter the dark matter (DM) thermalization time inside neutron stars. We find that Pauli blocking, kinematic constraints, and superfluidity and superconductivity in the

Have neutron stars a dark matter core

Composite solution to the neutron lifetime anomaly

Measurements of the lifetime of neutrons trapped in a bottle have been consistently shorter than the lifetime measured in neutron beam experiments. With trapping potentials as low as 50 neV and

Possible nature of dark matter

We present a study of neutron star models that contain dark matter (DM) in the core. The DM is assumed to have a particle nature and to be self-interacting. Using constraints on the mass and radius

Limits on self-interacting dark matter from neutron stars.

New severe constraints on the self-interactions of fermionic asymmetric dark matter based on observations of nearby old neutron stars are imposed which in some cases are by several orders of magnitude stricter than the ones from the bullet cluster.
