The abs mutants of Escherichia coli showed increased sensitivity to chloramphenicol, β-lactams, and many other unrelated antibacterial agents. The cell envelope was demonstrated to be more permeable to several β-lactams and dyes. The antibiotic hypersensitivity could be phenotypically suppressed by fucose and other deoxyhexoses.
