Novel Glycopolypeptide Synthesis Induced by Gametic Cell


Within the first hour of zygote matura t ion , Chlamydomonas reinhardtii cells stop synthesizing cer tain po lypep t ides tha t character ize the vege ta t ive and gamet ic stages of the life cycle and init iate the synthesis o f novel , zygote-specif ic polypept ides . A t least six of these po lypep t ides are secre ted into the m e d i u m , and f ine-s tructural studies indicate tha t they rep resen t c o m p o n e n t s of the cell wall that is synthesized and secreted early in zygote deve lopment . We conclude that a new p rog ram of prote in synthesis, and possibly also gene transcript ion, is initiated shortly af ter gamet ic cells fuse, a p rog ram that appears highly suited to celldifferentiat ion studies.
