The protein kinase inhibitor staurosporine was found to cause a dramatic increase in the free-running period (FRP) of circadian rhythms in the dinoflagellate Gonyaulax polyedra, and its effect was similar when added at different phases of the circadian cycle. Chronic exposure to staurosporine lengthened the FRP by as much as 7 h without significantly affecting the amplitude or waveform of the bioluminescence rhythm. The effect on the length of the FRP occurred only above a threshold…

Data strongly suggest that FRQ phosphorylation triggers its degradation, and the degradation rate of FRQ is a major determining factor for the period length of the Neurospora circadian clock.

Identification of a phosphorylation site mutant of hPER2 in a family with an inherited circadian rhythm abnormality strongly suggests that PER2 is aphysiologically relevant substrate of CKI, which may regulate multiple properties of clock proteins, including stability and intracellular localization.

Casein Kinase 1 Underlies Temperature Compensation of Circadian Rhythms in Human Red Blood Cells

In inhibition of CK1 abolished temperature compensation and increased the Q10 for the period of oscillation in RBCs, similar to observations in nucleated cells, indicating that CK1 activity is essential for circadian rhythms irrespective of the presence or absence of clock gene expression cycles.

Nuclear Entry of the Circadian Regulator mPER1 Is Controlled by Mammalian Casein Kinase I ɛ

It is found that mammalian CKIɛ binds to and phosphorylates the murine circadian regulator mper1, and may regulate mammalian circadian rhythm by controlling the rate at which mPER1 enters the nucleus.

Effects of the protein kinase inhibitor PKC412 on gene expression and link to physiological effects in zebrafish Danio eleuthero-embryos

It is led to the conclusion that PKC412-induced alterations of gene transcripts are partly paralleled by physiological effects at high, but not at low PKC 412 concentrations expected to be of environmental relevance.

An Inhibitor of Protein Phosphorylation Stops the Circadian Oscillator and Blocks Light-Induced Phase Shifting in Gonyaulax polyedra

The effects of 6-dimethylaminopurine (6-DMAP), known to reversibly block cell division in many systems through inhibition of protein kinase activity, are described here for Gonyaulax to show that in cells continuously exposed, the period is lengthened in a concentration-dependent fashion.

Inhibitors of Serine/Threonine Phosphoprotein Phosphatases Alter Circadian Properties in Gonyaulax polyedra

This study indicates that protein dephosphorylation catalyzed by protein serine/threonine phosphatases is necessary for proper functioning of the circadian system.

Changes in protein phosphorylation in the eye of Aplysia associated with circadian rhythm regulation by serotonin.

Two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to investigate changes in 32P labelled phosphoproteins which occur with 5-HT and other treatments to investigate the pathway through which 5- HT has its effect on the rhythm.

Light-Induced Phase Responses in Gonyaulax Are Drastically Altered by Creatine

It is found that the τ-shortening effect of creatine is greater in blue light, suggesting that it acts on a blue-sensitive light input pathway.

Circadian rhythms in the activity of a plant protein kinase.

Treatment of detached leaves with the protein synthesis inhibitors puromycin and cycloheximide blocked the nocturnal appearance of the protein kinase activity, maintained phosphoenolypyruvate carboxylase in the dephosphorylated state and blocked the circadian rhythms of CO2 output that is observed in constant darkness and CO2‐free air.

Acquisition of Circadian Bioluminescence Data in Gonyaulax and an Effect of the Measurement Procedure on the Period of the Rhythm

During measurements of the circadian (approximately 24-hr) rhythms of spontaneous bioluminescence in the marine dinoflagellate Gonyaulax polyedra, the individual cultures in vials were shielded from

The inhibition of a biological clock by actinomycin D.

This method gives a fairly accurate estimate of the makeup of any given mixture of LDH, especially in the case of the hy- brids in the chicken.

Circadian Phototransduction: Phase Resetting and Frequency of the Circadian Clock of Gonyaulax Cells in Red Light1

The fluence response of phase resetting to light-pulse intensity is not linear or logarithmic—rather, it is discontinuous, consistent with a limit cycle interpretation of Type 0 resetting of circadian clocks.
