A biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) sensor has been developed, which is based on an immobilized mixed culture of microorganisms combined with a dissolved oxygen (DO) optical fiber. The sensing film for BOD measurement consists of an organically-modified silicate (ORMOSIL) film embedded with tri(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline) ruthenium(II) perchlorate and three kinds of seawater microorganisms immobilized on a polyvinyl alcohol sol-gel matrix.
