This paper, based on a three-month visit to southern Guyana early in 1970, presents information onRupicola rupicola supplementary to that obtained byGilliard (1962) in the same area. In the course of observations at a dancing ground, a female was seen to visit a male on his court, to approach him and to nibble at his modified secondary feathers while he remained in static display on the ground. This was thought to represent precopulatory behaviour, but mating itself was not seen. Four nest…

Figures and Tables from this paper

Courtship disruption at the lek in the Guianan cock-of-the rock
TLDR
Results found no support for the hypothesis that females choose males on the basis of their immunity to disruption, and the role of courtship disruption in the operation of mate choice and the determination of male dispersion on leks is discussed.
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CLIMATE AND ANNUAL CYCLES IN THE COTINGIDAE
TLDR
It seems that both breeding and moult are as far as possible timed to coincide with this most favourable period; but whereas the moult takes a more or less fixed length of time the period when breeding is possible varies greatly in different species.
Notes on Nest and Chicks of the Guianan Red Cotinga (Phoenicircus carnifex) in Amazonas, Brazil
TLDR
The first description of the nest and young of the Guianan Red Cotinga is provided and additional natural history data on its diet and habitat preferences is provided.
Diet composition of nestlings and adults of the threatened Bolivian Swallow-tailed Cotinga Phibalura flavirostris boliviana (Aves: Passeriformes: Cotingidae) in Bolivia
TLDR
This species relied mostly on fruiting trees from semi-humid forest fragments and isolated trees on mountain savannas, and management plans for this bird should consider the conservation of these habitats.
A Lek ' s Icon The courtship display of a Guianan Cock-ofthe
beautiful, most grotesque, most behaviorally bizarre birds in the world (Snow, 1982). Like Howard Hughes and Greta Garbo, many cotingas enjoy a paradoxical notoriety: they are famous, but mysterious.
Female mate-searching strategies and behavioural correlates of copulation success in lekking long-tailed manakins (Chiroxiphia linearis)
TLDR
Insight is provided into mate choice in long-tailed manakins, revealing that females make complex decisions that have important fitness consequences, and that females may also influence the courtship behaviours of males.
Zur Ernährung des Cayenne-Felsenhahnes (Rupicola rupicola, Cotingidae)
TLDR
