During the past winter I had the opportunity to record some Kwakiutl as spoken at Alert Bay, a village in close contact with Whites, the location of several churches, schools, a cannery, and Government offices. Consequently many of the younger Indians, if not all of them, speak English. It is not of rare occurrence to hear young people when talking among themselves change from Indian to English.
