Large underestimates of the limitation to photosynthesis imposed by stomata can occur because of an error in the standard method of calculating average substomatal pressures of carbon dioxide when heterogeneity of those pressures occurs across a leaf surface. Most gas exchange data supposedly indicating nonstomatal inhibition of photosynthesis by water stress could have this error.
