The article provides a brief overview of what we have learned about the QCD vacuum, hadrons and hadronic matter during the last two decades. Asystematic description of the topic would need a large book, not an article. Some material is available in reviews written in a more technical way: instantons and chiral symmetry breaking are treated in [1], [2], correlators, OPE etc. in [3]. Alot of other material has been published recently: one can only consult the original papers.

Nonperturbative calculational method in quantum field theory

An approximate procedure for performing nonperturbative calculations in quantum field theories is presented. The focus will be quantum non-Abelian gauge theories with the goal of understanding some

Instantons in QCD

The authors review the theory and phenomenology of instantons in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). After a general overview, they provide a pedagogical introduction to semiclassical methods in quantum

Correlation functions in the QCD vacuum

Correlation functions are one of the key tools used to study the structure of the QCD vacuum. They are constructed out of the fundamental fields and can be calculated using quantum-field-theory

Chiral symmetry breaking by instantons

This is a review of the QCD instanton vacuum. After introducing instantons and their physical meaning, I show that the number of instantons in the vacuum fluctuates in accordance with the QCD trace

High-density QCD and instantons

Abstract Instantons generate strong nonperturbative interactions between quarks. In vacuum, these interactions lead to chiral symmetry breaking and generate constituent quark masses on the order of
