A bstractVirtual massless particles in quantum loops lead to nonlocal effects which can have interesting consequences, for example, for primordial magnetogenesis in cosmology or for computing finite N corrections in holography. We describe how the quantum effective actions summarizing these effects can be computed efficiently for Weyl-flat metrics by integrating the Weyl anomaly or, equivalently, the local renormalization group equation. This method relies only on the local Schwinger-DeWitt…

To B or not to B: primordial magnetic fields from Weyl anomaly

A bstractThe quantum effective action for the electromagnetic field in an expanding universe has an anomalous dependence on the scale factor of the metric arising from virtual charged particles in

Asymptotic Safety: Swampland or Wonderland?

We investigate the consequences of combining swampland conjectures with the requirement of asymptotic safety. To this end, we explore the infrared regime of asymptotically safe gravity in the

Dark QED from inflation

Abstract One contribution to any dark sector’s abundance comes from its gravitational production during inflation. If the dark sector is weakly coupled to the inflaton and the Standard Model, this

Effective action from the functional renormalization group

We study the quantum gravitational system coupled to a charged scalar, Dirac fermions, and electromagnetic fields. We use the ``exact'' or ``functional'' renormalization group equation to derive the

Nonlocal quantum effects in cosmology: Quantum memory, nonlocal FLRW equations, and singularity avoidance

We discuss cosmological effects of the quantum loops of massless particles, which lead to temporal non-localities in the equations of motion governing the scale factor a(t). For the effects discussed

Covariant non-local action for massless QED and the curvature expansion

A bstractWe explore the properties of non-local effective actions which include gravitational couplings. Non-local functions originally defined in flat space can not be easily generalized to curved

Macroscopic effects of the quantum trace anomaly

The low energy effective action of gravity in any even dimension generally acquires nonlocal terms associated with the trace anomaly, generated by the quantum fluctuations of massless fields. The

QED trace anomaly, non-local Lagrangians and quantum equivalence principle violations

A bstractWe discuss the derivation of the trace anomaly using a non-local effective action at one loop. This provides a simple and instructive form and emphasizes infrared physics. We then use this
