I discuss the impact of gauge-invariant perturbation theory, as developed originally by Vincent Moncrief, on numerical simulations of Einstein’s theory. Far from being replaced by numerical relativity, perturbative approaches remain essential for analysing, interpreting, extending and complementing fully nonlinear approaches.
