Nonconservative dipole forces in a two-atom system with one atom excited
@inproceedings{SanchezCanovas2021NonconservativeDF, title={Nonconservative dipole forces in a two-atom system with one atom excited}, author={Julio S'anchez-C'anovas and Manuel Donaire}, year={2021} }
We compute the nonconservative electric dipole forces between two atoms, one of which is initially excited. These forces derive from the time variation of the longitudinal electromagnetic momentum. In contrast to the conservative van-der-Waals forces, the nonconservative forces posses components orthogonal to the interatomic axis. Thus, despite being several orders of magnitude smaller than vander-Waals’, they might be accessible experimentally for the case of two identical atoms. In addition…

The Casimir Effect: Physical Manifestations of Zero-Point Energy
- Physics
- 1999
Zero-point fluctuations in quantum fields give rise to observable forces between material bodies, the so-called Casimir forces. In these lectures I present the theory of the Casimir effect, primarily…

The Quantum Vacuum
- Physics

The vacuum is the lowest energy state of a field in a certain region of space. This definition implies that no particles can be present in the vacuum state. In classical physics, the only features of…
