We argue that the Gopakumar-Vafa interpretation of the topological string partition function can be used to compute and resum certain non-perturbative brane instanton effects of type II CY compactifications. In particular the topological string A-model encodes the non-perturbative corrections to the hypermultiplet moduli space metric from general D1/D(-1)-brane instantons in 4d = 2 IIB models. We also discuss the reduction to 4d = 1 by fluxes and/or orientifolds and/or D-branes, and the…

Borel and Stokes Nonperturbative Phenomena in Topological String Theory and c = 1 Matrix Models

We address the nonperturbative structure of topological strings and c = 1 matrix models, focusing on understanding the nature of instanton effects alongside with exploring their relation to the

Instanton corrections and Emergent Strings

We study limits of infinite distance in the moduli space of 4d N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 string compactifications, in which instanton effects dominate. We first consider trajectories in the

D-instanton and polyinstanton effects from type I’ D0-brane loops

We study non-perturbative D(−1)-instanton corrections to quartic gauge and curvature couplings in 8d type IIB orientifolds, in terms of a one-loop computation of BPS D0-branes in T-dual type I’

On the computation of non‐perturbative effective potentials in the string theory landscape – IIB/F‐theory perspective –

We discuss a number of issues arising when computing non‐perturbative effects systematically across the string theory landscape. In particular, we cast the study of fairly generic physical properties

Decoupling A and B model in open string theory: topological adventures in the world of tadpoles

In this paper we analyze the problem of tadpole cancellation in open topological strings. We prove that the inclusion of unorientable worldsheet diagrams guarantees a consistent decoupling of A and B

Heterotic-type II duality in the hypermultiplet sector

We revisit the duality between heterotic string theory compactified on K3 × T2 and type IIA compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold X in the hypermultiplet sector. We derive an explicit map between

BPS Wall Crossing and Topological Strings

By embedding N=2 gauge theories in string theory and utilizing string dualities we map the counting of BPS states with arbitrary electric and magnetic charges to computations of an A-model

Infinite distances and the axion weak gravity conjecture

The axion Weak Gravity Conjecture implies that when parametrically increasing the axion decay constants, instanton corrections become increasingly important. We provide strong evidence for the

Non-perturbative superpotentials across lines of marginal stability

We discuss the behaviour of non-perturbative superpotentials in 4d N = 1 type II compactifications (and orientifolds thereof) near lines of marginal stability, where the spectrum of contributing BPS

Flux interactions on D-branes and instantons

We provide a direct world-sheet derivation of the couplings of NS-NS and R-R fluxes to various types of D-branes (including instantonic ones) by evaluating disk amplitudes among two open string

Non-perturbative effective interactions from fluxes

Motivated by possible implications on the problem of moduli stabilization and other phenomenological aspects, we study D-brane instanton effects in flux compactifications. We focus on a local model

Non-Perturbative Corrections and Modularity in N=1 Type IIB Compactifications

Non-perturbative corrections and modular properties of four-dimensional type IIB Calabi-Yau orientifolds are discussed. It is shown that certain non-perturbative α' corrections survive in the large

D-brane Instantons in Type II String Theory

We review recent progress in determining the effects of D-brane instantons in N=1 supersymmetric compactifications of Type II string theory to four dimensions. We describe the abstract D-brane

A Perturbative Window into Non-Perturbative Physics

We argue that for a large class of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories the effective superpotential as a function of the glueball chiral superfield is exactly given by a summation of planar diagrams of

D-brane instantons and the effective field theory of flux compactifications

We provide a description of the effects of fluxes on euclidean D-brane instantons purely in terms of the 4d effective action. The effect corresponds to the dressing of the effective non-perturbative

Nonperturbative Effects and the Large-Order Behavior of Matrix Models and Topological Strings

This work addresses nonperturbative effects in both matrix models and topological strings, and their relation with the large-order behavior of the 1/N expansion. We study instanton configurations in
