We apply the vectorized Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) method to post-processing of direct imaging data for exoplanetary systems such as circumstellar disks. NMF is an iterative approach, which first creates a non-orthogonal and non-negative basis of components using given reference images, then models a target with the components. The constructed model is then rescaled with a factor to compensate for the contribution from a disk. We compare NMF with existing methods (classical… Expand
Using Data Imputation for Signal Separation in High-contrast Imaging
To characterize circumstellar systems in high contrast imaging, the fundamental step is to construct a best point spread function (PSF) template for the non-circumstellar signals (i.e., star lightExpand
DiskFM: A forward modeling tool for disk analysis with coronagraphic instruments
Because of bright starlight leakage in coronagraphic raw images, faint astrophysical objects such as exoplanets can only be detected using powerful point spread function (PSF) subtraction algorithms.Expand
Exact Guarantees on the Absence of Spurious Local Minima for Non-negative Robust Principal Component Analysis
TLDR
This work shows that the low-dimensional formulation of the symmetric and asymmetric positive rank-1 RPCA based on the Burer-Monteiro approach has benign landscape, and provides strong deterministic and probabilistic guarantees for the exact recovery of the true principal components. Expand

Online nonnegative tensor factorization and CP-dictionary learning for Markovian data
TLDR
This work introduces a novel online NTF algorithm that learns a CP basis from a given stream of tensor-valued data under general constraints, and proves that the algorithm converges to the set of stationary points of the objective function under the hypothesis that the sequence of data tensors have functional Markovian dependence. Regime-switching model detection map for direct exoplanet detection in ADI sequences
TLDR
A new detection algorithm for ADI sequences is proposed, deriving from the regime-switching model first proposed in the 1980s, and shows an overall better performance in the receiver operating characteristic space when compared with standard signal-to-noise-ratio maps for several state-of-the-art ADI-based post-processing algorithms. Spectral unmixing for exoplanet direct detection in hyperspectral data
Context. The direct detection of faint exoplanets with high-contrast instruments can be boosted by combining it with high spectral resolution. For integral field spectrographs yielding hyperspectralExpand
The Gemini Planet Imager View of the HD 32297 Debris Disk

Incorporating adaptive optics controls history in post-processing of ground-based coronagraph models
The planet detection thresholds of space-based coronagraphs are predicted to lie within an order of magnitude from their theoretical (shot-noise) limits. Ground-based telescopes, on the other hand,Expand
ADI.jl: A Julia Package for High-Contrast Imaging
TLDR
High-contrast imaging is a powerful technique for discovering and characterizing exoplanets but the size of HCI data and complexity of processing algorithms requires an efficient numerical framework that simultaneously offers modularity for rapid experimentation and discovery. Expand
