The objective of the present study was to determine the variability of the arterio-venous O(2) concentration difference [C(a-v)O(2)] at anaerobic threshold and at peak oxygen uptake (VO(2)) during a progressively increasing cycle ergometer exercise test, with the purpose of assessing the possible error in estimating stroke volume from measurements of VO(2) alone.
