We summarize here the observed properties of ``infrared companions'' to T Tauri stars and argue that their observational properties are identical to those of Class I sources. They may therefore be embedded protostars in a much earlier evolutionary phase than T Tauri stars, in which case these multiple systems are significantly non-coeval as opposed to the majority of young binary systems. They would have formed through a different mechanism than core fragmentation. The only distinction between…

Collisions in young triple systems
We perform N-body simulations of young triple systems consisting of two low-mass companions orbiting around a significantly more massive primary. We find that, when the orbits of the companions are

The Infrared Companions of T Tauri Stars
The infrared companions (IRCs) associated with several normal low-mass pre-main-sequence (T Tauri) stars pose an interesting problem for theories of binary star formation. The IRCs have very low
Observational Constraints on the Formation and Evolution of Binary Stars
We present a high spatial resolution multiwavelength survey of 44 young binary star systems in Taurus-Auriga with separations of 10-1000 AU. These observations, which were obtained using the Hubble
Are wide pre-main-sequence binaries coeval?
We have observed a sample of 39 wide (projected separations 400-6000 AU) pre-main-sequence binary pairs spectroscopically and with optical and near-infrared images. The observations enable us to
Ejection of a Low-Mass Star in a Young Stellar System in Taurus
We present the analysis of high angular resolution Very Large Array radio observations, made at 11 epochs over the last 20 years, of the multiple system T Tauri. One of the sources (Sb) in the system
The circumstellar environment of low-mass protostars: A millimeter continuum mapping survey ?
We present a complete 1.3 mm continuum mapping survey of the embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Taurus molecular cloud. We have also imaged several isolated Bok globules, as well as
Disintegrating Multiple Systems in Early Stellar Evolution
An analysis of the multiplicity of 14 sources driving giant Herbig-Haro flows has revealed an observed binary frequency between 79% and 86%, of which half are higher order multiples. These sources
Resolved Near-Infrared Spectroscopy of the Mysterious Pre-Main-Sequence Binary System T Tauri S
We obtained new near-infrared images of the prototypical pre-main-sequence triple system T Tau, as well as the first resolved medium-resolution spectra of the close pair T Tau S. At the time of our
Accretion Disks around Young Objects. II. Tests of Well-mixed Models with ISM Dust
We construct detailed vertical structure models of irradiated accretion disks around T Tauri stars with interstellar medium dust uniformly mixed with gas. The dependence of the structure and emission
No Fossil Disk in the T Tauri Multiple System V773 Tauri
We present new multiepoch near-infrared (NIR) and optical high angular resolution images of the V773 Tau pre-main-sequence triple system, a weak-line T Tauri star (WTTS) system in which the presence
Evidence for Extinction and Accretion Variability in T Tauri South
We present angularly resolved spectra of T Tau North and South in the 3 μm water-ice feature and K band. Most of the water-ice absorption lies along the line of sight toward T Tau South, confirming
