Abstract Microbial biomass N, net ammonification, net nitrification, denitrification potential, numbers of nitrifiers and the pH-dependency of nitrification were measured from the humus layer and mineral soil layers in adjacent stands of Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.), Norway spruce ( Picea abies (L.)
