The nitrogen balance of a Trachypogon grassland in Calabozo, Venezuela, is calculated for average conditions using biomass accumulation, nitrogen content, and turnover rates of organic matter. Burning Trachypogon grasslands results in losses of 8.5 kg N ha−1 yr−1, while rainfall inputs average 2.6 kg N ha−1 yr−1. Uptake of N by vegetation is 14.8 kg N ha−1 yr−1, but the total N required to build new tissue during a growing season is about 30 kg N ha−1 yr−1, so that about 50% of the nitrogen in… Expand
