Twenty-five aromatic nitro, dinitro and trinitro compounds were isolated in low yields of less than 1 mg l−1 from a Salegentibacter sp. strain T436 derived from Arctic pack ice. Their structures were elucidated by MS and NMR techniques. Seven of these compounds, namely, 2-hydroxy-3-(4′-hydroxy-3′-nitrophenyl)-propionic acid methyl ester (6), 2-chloro-3- (4′-hydroxy-3′-nitrophenyl)propionic acid methyl ester (7), 3-(4′-hydroxy-3′,5′-dinitrophenyl)-propionic acid methyl ester (14), 4′-hydroxy-3…

Aqabamycins A–G: novel nitro maleimides from a marine Vibrio species: II. Structure elucidation*

The structures of secondary metabolites with antibacterial and cytotoxic activities produced by a marine Vibrio strain from the Red Sea were elucidated using NMR, MS spectra and by comparison with synthetic material.

Aqabamycins A-G: novel nitro maleimides from a marine Vibrio species. I. Taxonomy, fermentation, isolation and biological activities

Seven novel maleimide derivatives named aqabamycin A, B, C, D, E, F and G are described here for the first time from a natural source and vibrindole A was found to have cytotoxic activity.

3-Nitroasterric Acid Derivatives from an Antarctic Sponge-Derived Pseudogymnoascus sp. Fungus.

Four new nitroasterric acid derivatives were obtained from the cultures of a Pseudogymnoascus sp.

Simultaneous Detection of 3-Nitrotyrosine and 3-Nitro-4-hydroxyphenylacetic Acid in Human Urine by Online SPE LC-MS/MS and Their Association with Oxidative and Methylated DNA Lesions.

The findings demonstrated that a relationship exists between oxidative and nitrative stress, however, 3-NTYR and NHPA were correlated with N7-MeG and N3-MeA but not with NDMA, suggesting that NDMA may not be a representative biomarker of N-nitroso compounds that are induced by RNS.

Marine Terpenoids from Polar Latitudes and Their Potential Applications in Biotechnology

The regulations on access and benefit sharing requirements for research in polar environments are summarized, and an overview of the natural product arsenal from Antarctic and Arctic marine organisms that displays promising uses for fighting human disease is provided.

Total Synthesis of Aqabamycin G, a Nitrophenyl Indolylmaleimide Marine Alkaloid from Vibrio sp. WMBA.

The first total synthesis of the marine alkaloid aqabamycin G is disclosed. The synthetic sequence involved the stepwise addition to maleimide of an indole motif and a substituted diazo-benzenoid

Bioactive Metabolites Produced by Microorganisms Collected in Antarctica and the Arctic

This overview presents some of the most important secondary metabolites (antibiotics, alkaloids, high carbon amino acids, nitro compounds, diketopiperazines etc.) produced by Antarctic and Arctic microorganisms.

Antimicrobial Potential of Cold-Adapted Bacteria and Fungi from Polar Regions

The versatile antimicrobial potential of microorganisms from Polar Regions is discussed in this chapter.

Chemodiversity of Dissolved Organic Matter and Its Molecular Changes Driven by Rhizosphere Activities in Fe Ore Tailings Undergoing Eco-Engineered Pedogenesis.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in soil structure and biogeochemical function development, which are fundamental for the eco-engineering of tailings-soil formation to underpin

New Aromatic Nitro Compounds from Salegentibacter sp. T436, an Arctic Sea Ice Bacterium: Taxonomy, Fermentation, Isolation and Biological Activities

Nineteen aromatic nitro compounds were isolated from the culture broth of an Artic sea ice bacterium and 2-Nitro-4-(2′-nitroethenyl)-phenol was the most potent antimicrobial and cytotoxic substance.

Five nitro-phenyl compounds from the South China Sea mangrove fungus

A novel nitro-phenyl glucoside was isolated from mangrove endophytic fungus (fungus B60), collected from the Shenzhen mangroves Acanthus ilicifolius linn, which were isolated for the first time as natural products.

Isolation and biosynthesis of aurachin P and 5-nitroresorcinol from Stigmatella erecta.

The isolation of aurachin P from Stigmatella erecta strain Pd e32 is described and phloroglucinol is postulated as an intermediate branching off from 3-dehydroquinate in the shikimate pathway.

Aqabamycins, Rare Nitro Maleimides and other Novel Metabolites from Microorganisms; Generation and Application of an HPLC-UV-ESI MS/MS Database

To enable the isolation and structure elucidation of new and preferably biologically active secondary metabolites from marine and terrestrial bacteria, several steps needed to be completed such as biological assays, chemical screening and the dereplication through HPLC-MS/MS for the detection of interesting compounds in crude extracts.

Natural products from marine bacteria

The structural similarity between some of the metabolites in this study and previously reported compounds from sponges, ascidians, and bryozoan indicates that the microbial origin of these compounds must be considered.
