Magnocellular hypothalamic neurons of the paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic (SON) nuclei have been shown to contain a wide variety of messenger molecules in addition to vasopressin and oxytocin, including the nitric oxide (NO)-synthesizing enzyme (NOS).
