The role of nitric oxide (NO) and adherent spleen cells in systemic immunosuppression developing in animals carrying malignant glioma isografts was analyzed. Rats harboring a subcutaneous glioma isograft for 3 weeks were immunized with glioma cells genetically engineered to express IFN-gamma. One week later spleen cells were tested for immune responsiveness in vitro. A decreased cytotoxic activity of NK-cells and T-cells compared to tumor-free animals immunized in parallel was shown.
