The increase in obesity and lipid disorders in industrialized countries may be due to irregular eating patterns. Few studies have investigated the effects of nighttime snacking on energy metabolism. We examined the effects of nighttime snacking for 13 days on energy metabolism. Eleven healthy women (means ± SD; age: 23 ± 1 yr; body mass index: 20.6 ± 2.6 kg/m(2)) participated in this randomized crossover trial for a 13-day intervention period. Subjects consumed a specified snack (192.4 ± 18.3…

Influence of night-time protein and carbohydrate intake on appetite and cardiometabolic risk in sedentary overweight and obese women
- MedicineBritish Journal of Nutrition
- 2014
The results of the present study reveal that night-time consumption of protein or carbohydrate by sedentary overweight and obese women improves their appetite measures but negatively affects insulin levels.
The influence of nighttime feeding of carbohydrate or protein combined with exercise training on appetite and cardiometabolic risk in young obese women.

- 2015
Nighttime feeding for 4 weeks did not impact insulin sensitivity (assessed via homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance) when combined with exercise training in obese women and exercise training increased lean mass and strength, decreased body fat, and improved mood state in all groups.

Wheat Albumin Increases the Ratio of Fat to Carbohydrate Oxidation during the Night in Healthy Participants: A Randomized Controlled Trial

WA has the potential to shift the energy balance to a higher ratio of fat to carbohydrate oxidation during the night, and postprandial fat oxidation was significantly higher following the WA treatment as compared with the PL treatment.
Eating Dinner Early Improves 24-h Blood Glucose Levels and Boosts Lipid Metabolism after Breakfast the Next Day: A Randomized Cross-Over Trial
- MedicineNutrients
- 2021
Despite a difference of only 3 h, eating dinner early (at 18:00) has a positive effect on blood glucose level fluctuation and substrate oxidation compared with eating dinner late (at 21:00).
The Effect of Casein Protein Prior to Sleep on Fat Metabolism in Obese Men
- Medicine, BiologyNutrients
- 2016
CAS consumption before sleep did not affect fat or glucose metabolism, REE, or suppress appetite in hyperinsulemic obese men, suggesting CAS may be consumed before sleep without impeding overnight or morning fat metabolism in young, obese men.
Lipolysis and Fat Oxidation Are Not Altered with Presleep Compared with Daytime Casein Protein Intake in Resistance-Trained Women.
- MedicineThe Journal of nutrition
- 2019
Presleep PRO is a viable option for increasing PRO consumption in resistance-trained women because it does not blunt overnight lipolysis, and will therefore likely not lead to increases in subcutaneous abdominal fat.
Late-Night Eating-Induced Physiological Dysregulation and Circadian Misalignment are Accompanied by Microbial Dysbiosis.
- MedicineMolecular nutrition & food research

Late-night eating caused physiological dysregulation and misalignment of circadian rhythm, together with microbial dysbiosis, which further contributes to the development of metabolic disorder.

Epidemiological evidence is provided that consumption of nighttime snack was associated with obesity and hyperglycemia in Chinese adult teachers, however, the underlying mechanisms still need further investigation.

Regular meal frequency creates more appropriate insulin sensitivity and lipid profiles compared with irregular meal frequency in healthy lean women

The irregular meal frequency appears to produce a degree of insulin resistance and higher fasting lipid profiles, which may indicate a deleterious effect on these cardiovascular risk factors.
The human body may buffer small differences in meal size and timing during a 24-h wake period provided energy balance is maintained.
- MedicineThe Journal of nutrition

It is found no clear indication that it would be more favorable to ingest few larger daytime meals than smaller meals throughout the 24-h period, but the body seems to be able to buffer small differences in meal size and timing provided energy balance is maintained.

A snack consumed in a satiety state fails to prolong the intermeal interval and would thus tend to favor storage, as well as the latency of the dinner request, between sessions.
