Abstract The present work describes the metabolites produced by a strain identified as Streptomyces youssoufiensis, whose secondary metabolites profile has not been studied so far. The crude ethyl acetate extract was analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, leading to the detection of the ionophoric polyethers nigericin, epinigericin, abierixin and the newly isolated grisorixin methyl ester. The presence of epimeric forms of nigericin…
Enhanced Production and Quantitative Evaluation of Nigericin from the Algerian Soil-Living Streptomyces youssoufiensis SF10 Strain
TLDR
The HPLC-ELSD method, optimized here for the quantitative detection of nigericin, can find wider applications in the analysis of several other metabolites characterized by a similar polycyclic polyether structure or, more generally, by the lack of significant chromophores in their molecular structure.
Actinobacteria Derived from Algerian Ecosystems as a Prominent Source of Antimicrobial Molecules
TLDR
Focusing on the Algerian natural sources of antimicrobial metabolites, this work is a representative example of the potential of a closely combined study on biology and chemistry of natural products.

Antibacterial activity of 1-methyl ester-nigericin from Streptomyces hygroscopicus BRM10; an endophyte in Alpinia galanga
Strain BRM10 was isolated from the root tissues of Alpinia galanga Swartz. and identified as Streptomyces hygroscopicus BRM10 on the basis of morphology, chemotaxonomy and 16SrDNA sequencing. It was
Streptomyces zagrosensis sp. nov., isolated from soil.
TLDR
The taxonomic position of a novel actinomycete isolated from soil in Fars Province (Iran) was determined using a polyphasic approach and strain HM 1154(T) is considered to represent a novel species within the genus Streptomyces, for which the name StrePTomyces zagrosensis sp.
Streptomyces youssoufiensis sp. nov., isolated from a Moroccan phosphate mine.
TLDR
A novel actinomycete, strain X4(T), was isolated from a phosphate mine in Youssoufia, 100 km north of Marrakesh, Morocco, and was evaluated by a polyphasic approach, finding it to be a novel species of the genus Streptomyces.
Analysis of Specific Mutants in the Lasalocid Gene Cluster: Evidence for Enzymatic Catalysis of a Disfavoured Polyether Ring Closure
TLDR
Specific deletion from the gene cluster of the flanking lasC gene, which is predicted to encode a flavin‐linked epoxidase, abolished production both of lasalocid and of the minor cometabolite iso‐las alocid without leading to accumulation of an identifiable intermediate; this suggests that oxidative cyclisation to form the polyether rings takes place on the PKS before release of the full‐length polyketide product.
Actinobacteria from Arid and Desert Habitats: Diversity and Biological Activity
TLDR
The diversity and biotechnological potential of Actinobacteria obtained from arid ecosystems, along with the recent work trend on Iranian arid soils, are reported.
Abierixin, a new polyether antibiotic. Production, structural determination and biological activities.
TLDR
A new polyether antibiotic, abierixin, was found in the mycelium of a culture broth of nigericin-producing Streptomyces albus NRRL B-1865 and exhibited weak antimicrobial and ionophorous activities, low toxicity but good anticoccidial activity.
Secondary Metabolites with Anti-Staphylococcus aureus Activity from Streptomyces hygroscopicus

Toxoplasma gondii: activity of the polyether ionophorous antibiotic nigericin on tachyzoites in cell culture.
TLDR
The study of the effects of the nigericin on tachyzoites of Toxoplasma gondii clearly demonstrated that very low concentrations of this ionophore were sufficient to inhibit strongly the penetration and totally inhibit the intracellular development of parasites.
