Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the major, immune-mediated, demyelinating neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system (CNS). Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is a well-established animal model of MS. The aim of the present study was to investigate the protective and ameliorative effects of N. sativa seeds (2.8 g/kg body weight) in EAE-induced Wistar rats. EAE-induced rats were divided into: 1- EAE-induced rats ("EAE" group). 2- "N. sativa + EAE" group received daily oral…

Figures and Tables from this paper

Effects of Tripterygium glycoside treatment on experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

TTP effectively inhibited EAE via the inhibition of CNS inflammatory cell infiltration, enhancement of inflammatory cell apoptosis, and downregulation of the expression of NF‑κB and IL‑2.

Effect Nigella sativa extract for balancing immune response in pristane induced lupus mice model

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease with wide manifestations that require long-term treatment. Current treatment has not shown a satisfying result and still yields some

Cannabis-induced Moto-Cognitive Dysfunction in Wistar Rats: Ameliorative Efficacy of Nigella Sativa.

The observed ameliorative effects of NSO make it a promising agent against moto-cognitive dysfunction and cerebelo-hippocampal alterations induced by cannabis.

Anti-LINGO-1 improved remyelination and neurobehavioral deficit in cuprizone-induced demyelination

Evidence is provided that LINGO-1 antibody can improve remyelination and neurobehavioral deficit in multiple sclerosis and motor impairment was significantly improved in the treatment group.

Subchronic dichlorvos-induced Cardiotoxicity in Wistar rats: Mitigative efficacy of Nigella sativa oil

It can be concluded that NSO was able to attenuate DDVP-induced cardiotoxicity and increase the plasma levels of TC, LDL, atherogenic and atherosclerotic indices, but this was prevented by co-administration with NSO.

Dichlorvos Induced AChE Inhibition in Discrete Brain Regions and the Neuro-Cognitive Implications: Ameliorative Effect of Nigella Sativa

It is concluded that NSO reactivated DDVP-induced AChE inhibition and improved memory indices, thus, it may serve as a potential treatment in the management of DDVP poisoning cases.

Medicinal herbs and multiple sclerosis: Overview on the hard balance between new therapeutic strategy and occupational health risk

A glance at the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants and at the risk for MS onset of pesticides used by medicinal plant growers and present in medicinal herbs is provided.

Present study proved that N. sativa had inhibitory effect on B. hominis in vitro and prevented cytopathic effect in infected mice inoculated orally with B.hominis.

Nigella sativa: Valuable perspective in the management of chronic diseases

In vivo and in vitro studies demonstrated N. sativa positive effect against diabetes, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia, all of them associated to cardiovascular diseases progression.

Amelioration of chronic relapsing experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (cr-eae) using thymoquinone - biomed 2009.

Preliminary result showed that TQ due to its antioxidant effect is almost 90% preventive and 50% curative in CR-EAE, which could assist further studies on the mechanism of action of TQ and explore the possibility of treating the human chronic relapsing multiple sclerosis phase.

Improvement of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) by thymoquinone; an oxidative stress inhibitor.

Thymoquinone inhibited oxidative stress which leads into improvement in EAE animals, and may have a role in treatment of Multiple Sclerosis.

Thymoquinone inhibits the activation of NF-kappaB in the brain and spinal cord of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

Treatment of rats with thymoquinone 1 mg/kg/day concomitant to myelin basic protein and after the appearance of clinical signs resulted in preventing and ameliorating experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

Chronologic neuropathology of relapsing experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in the mouse.

Since the mouse is a highly accessible species that is immunologically well understood, this model might lend itself to fuller dissection of autoimmune events associated with recurrent demyelination, problems of considerable significance to multiple sclerosis research.

Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis: Neutralizing antibody to TGFβ1 enhances the clinical severity of the disease

Chemokine expression in GKO mice (lacking interferon-gamma) with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

Results indicate that IP-10 is dependent upon IFN-gamma for its upregulation during this model disease, and document directly that astrocyte expression of chemokines during EAE is governed by pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Neuroprotective effects of Nigella sativa on experimental spinal cord injury in rats

In conclusion, NS treatment might be beneficial in spinal cord tissue damage, and therefore shows potential for clinical implications.
