BACKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is strongly associated with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. False-negative results are common in routine serological tests and quantitative real-time PCR because of HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) variation and low HBV copy number.
