A group of influential hardware manufacturers has announced support for a new fixed, wireless, broadband network technology, boosting the approach's prospects for widespread adoption. Vendors such as Intel and Nokia have joined a nonprofit consortium, the WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) Forum, that promotes the use of all IEEE 802.16 broadband wireless standards.
