We point out that detectable inflationary tensor modes can be generated by particle or string sources produced during inflation, consistently with the requirements for inflation and constraints from scalar fluctuations. We show via examples that this effect can dominate over the contribution from quantum fluctuations of the metric, occurring even when the inflationary potential energy is too low to produce a comparable signal. Thus a detection of tensor modes from inflation does not… Expand

Gravity waves and non-Gaussian features from particle production in a sector gravitationally coupled to the inflaton
We study the possibility that particle production during inflation could source observable gravity waves on scales relevant for Cosmic Microwave Background experiments. A crucial constraint on suchExpand
Can a spectator scalar field enhance inflationary tensor mode
We consider the possibility of enhancing the inflationary tensor mode by introducing a spectator scalar field with a small sound speed which induces gravitational waves as a second order effect. WeExpand
Effective Planck Mass and the Scale of Inflation
A recent paper argued that it is not possible to infer the energy scale of inflation from the amplitude of tensor fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background, because the usual connection isExpand
Gravitational waves from inflation
The production of a stochastic background of gravitational waves is a fundamental prediction of any cosmological inflationary model. The features of such a signal encode unique information about theExpand
Blue tensor spectrum from particle production during inflation

Scale-dependent gravitational waves from a rolling axion
We consider a model in which a pseudo-scalar field $\sigma$ rolls for some e-folds during inflation, sourcing one helicity of a gauge field. These fields are only gravitationally coupled to theExpand
The scale of inflation in the landscape
Abstract We determine the frequency of regions of small-field inflation in the Wigner landscape as an approximation to random supergravities/type IIB flux compactifications. We show that small-fieldExpand
Oscillation in power spectrum of primordial gravitational wave as a signature of higher-order stringy corrections
A bstractIn low-energy effective string theory, α′ corrections involve the coupling of the dilaton field to Gauss-Bonnet term. We assume that the dilaton potential is fine tuned so that the dilatonExpand

Trapped Inflation
We analyze a distinctive mechanism for inflation in which particle production slows down a scalar field on a steep potential, and show how it descends from angular moduli in string compactifications.Expand

Probing Planckian physics : resonant production of particles during inflation and features in the primordial power spectrum

Effective field theory for inflation
The methods of effective field theory are used to study generic theories of inflation with a single inflaton field. For scalar modes, the leading corrections to the R correlation function are foundExpand

We study an inflationary model developed by Kaloper and Sorbo, in which the inflaton is an axion with a sub-Planckian decay constant, whose potential is generated by mixing with a topological 4-formExpand
A natural framework for chaotic inflation.
It is shown that inflation with a quadratic potential occurs naturally in theories where an axionlike field mixes with a 4-form, and the axion can roll slowly towards its minimum, as in the simplest version of chaotic inflation. Expand
