The Siphonostomatoida (Copepoda) consists of 40 families comprised mainly of symbiotic members. Representatives of 12 families occur in symbiosis with elasmobranchs. Only eight families, 19 genera and 35 species have been reported from 37 elasmobranchs off the coast of South Africa. Elasmobranchs caught in the nets of the Natal Sharks Board and by fishermen of the Meer-en-See Boat Club, KwaZulu-Natal Province were examined for symbiotic siphonostomatoids.
