The purpose of this chapter is to describe the infant feeding practices among infants and toddlers (aged 0-24 months) and to describe food group consumption patterns of these infants and young children (0-48 months) participating in the 2008 Feeding Infants and Toddlers Study (FITS). The FITS 2008 is a cross-sectional survey of a national sample of US children (n = 3,273). Results indicate a longer duration of breastfeeding; however, 17% of infants received cow's milk before the recommended age…
Beverage Consumption among U.S. Children Aged 0–24 Months: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)
TLDR
Water intake increased with age and the contribution of water from food and beverage sources was ~20% and ~80% for all children, respectively, and Disparities in beverage consumption by race/ethnicity and income level are apparent in early life.
Association of Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Intake during Infancy with Dental Caries in 6-year-olds
TLDR
It is found that frequent SSB intake during 10-12 months of age significantly increased the likelihood of having dental caries among 6-year-olds, and late infancy may be an important time for mothers to establish healthy beverage practices for their children.
Specific infant feeding practices do not consistently explain variation in anthropometry at age 1 year in urban United States, Mexico, and China cohorts.
TLDR
Although feeding variables differed by cohort, their impact on anthropometry differences was not consistent among cohorts, and differences in specific feeding practices did not explain the significant variation in anthropometry.
The Association of Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Intake During Infancy With Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Intake at 6 Years of Age
TLDR
It is suggested that infancy may be an important time for mothers to establish healthy beverage practices for their children and these findings can be used to inform intervention efforts to reduce SSB intake among children.
A short food-group-based dietary questionnaire is reliable and valid for assessing toddlers' dietary risk in relatively advantaged samples
TLDR
The TDQ is a valid and reliable screening tool for identifying at-risk toddlers in relatively advantaged samples and its reliability and validity are investigated.
Sweetness: Developmental and Functional Effects
TLDR
Breastfeeding plays a role in promoting infants’ acceptance of and preference for healthy foods during weaning, which is an important foundation for efforts to promote healthier dietary intakes and growth trajectories during childhood.
Executive summary: Evaluating the evidence base to support the inclusion of infants and children from birth to 24 mo of age in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans--"the B-24 Project".
TLDR
This supplement includes the B-24 Executive Summary, which describes the B -24 Project and the deliberations of the 4 working groups during the process of developing priority topics for the systematic review, and a research agenda to address the critical gaps.
How information about what is "healthy" versus "unhealthy" impacts children's consumption of otherwise identical foods.
TLDR
The results demonstrate that children's eating behavior is affected by messages they receive from other people, including messages about health, which could lead to effective interventions in the food domain.
Early nutrition: impact on short- and long-term health. Concluding remarks.
TLDR
Animal studies that have examined the ways in which nutrition before and after birth can affect longterm health are examined, finding examples from animal studies of evidence of these longterm effects, and some possible underlying mechanisms whereby nutrition in early life can affectLongterm health.

TLDR
The IFPS II provides a valuable database because of its large sample size, the frequency of its questionnaires, and its wide coverage of issues salient to infant feeding.

Delayed introduction of solid feeding reduces child overweight and obesity at 10 years
TLDR
Delayed introduction of solids is associated with reduced odds of child overweight/obesity, and wider promotion of current infant feeding guidelines could have a significant impact on the rates ofChild overweight and obesity.
Comparison of children's dietary intake patterns with US dietary guidelines.
TLDR
The results suggest that implementation of nutrition education programmes may be important for promoting healthy nutrition among American children and that sex or ethnic differences were evident.
