Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.), known as one of the most desirable tropical fruits of Southeast Asia, has been considered as an obligate agamospermous hybrid, thought to have arisen from two wild species, G. celebica L. (syn. G.hombroniana Pierre) and G. malaccensis Hook. f. However, this putative origin was based on a misidentification of G. malaccensis, which was confused for G. penangiana Pierre. Intensive field studies and molecular investigations based on internal transcribed spacer… Expand

Morphological variations of mangosteen fruits from Luzon and Mindanao Islands, the Philippines
TLDR
The two varieties of mangosteen fruits in the Philippines, G. mangostana and G. malaccensis, are so closely related that they could be combined together as one species as identified in the morphological analysis of this study. Expand
DNA barcoding of important fruit tree species of agronomic interest in the genus Garcinia L. from the Western Ghats
TLDR
DNA barcoding was found to be a practical and rapid method for identifying more endemic species and could be helpful in delineating the various species of Garcinia L. species. Expand
Pollen development in male sterile mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) and male fertile seashore mangosteen (Garcinia celebica L.)
TLDR
The present results demonstrate the importance of coordinated development between the tapetum and microspores in pollen development and provide new insights into male sterility in mangosteen (G. mangostana), a closely related species with fertile anthers. Expand
Phylogenetic Assessment of Garcinia Species Using RAPD Markers
The plants in the Garcinia species are economically important.Phylogenetic investigation is needed for these tree species to boost breeding and conservation programmes. Six Garcinia species wereExpand
Molecular analyses of genetic variation and phylogenetic relationship in Indian soap nut (Sapindus L.) and closely related taxa of the family Sapindaceae
TLDR
Molecular differentiation and phylogenetic relationships of Indian Sapindus and its closely allied taxa of the family Sapindaceae was studied using nuclear ribosomal DNA of internal transcribed spacer (ITS), and ITS region has shown a reliable marker to differentiate different taxa considered. Expand
DISSECTING GENETIC DIVERSITY IN GARCINIA XANTHOCHYMUS USING ISSR AND RAPD MARKERS
TLDR
The detected polymorphism is enough at species level and therefore the RAPD and ISSR can be used as efficient markers for genetic relatedness assessment in G. xanthochymus. Expand
Male functionality in Garcinia celebica L., a candidate ancestor species of mangosteen (G. mangostana L.)
TLDR
The fruit of this crop has not been found in the wild for more than a century, and its origins are unclear as this crop hasn’t had any contact with the wild. Expand
Molecular Insights into the Genetic Diversity of Garcinia cambogia Germplasm Accessions
TLDR
The high level of genetic diversity among the studied accessions of Garciainia cambogia was supported by the large variation in the morphological characters observed in the flowers, leaves, fruits and seeds of these sampled accessions. Expand
The Beneficial Effect of Eco-Friendly Green Nanoparticles Using Garcinia mangostana Peel Extract against Pathogenicity of Listeria monocytogenes in Female BALB/c Mice
TLDR
The results indicate that G. mangostana may provide therapeutic value against L. monocytogenes-induced oxidative stress and histopathological alterations, and that these effects may be related to antiapoptotic and antioxidant activities. Expand
Medicinal Plants as Alternative Treatments for Progressive Macular Hypomelanosis
TLDR
Progressive macular hypomelanosis is a hypopigmentation disease mostly affecting humans who have dark skin, as it is caused by a bacterium known as Propionibacterium acnes. Expand

Studies in Garcinia, dioecious tropical forest trees: the origin of the mangosteen (G. mangostana L.)
TLDR
It is suggested that mangosteen is an allopolypoid derivative of these species which arose as a female from a single hybridization event in cultivation, and which has since reproduced asexually. Expand
Molecular evidence in identifying parents of Garcinia mangostana L.
TLDR
The objective of this study was to identify the possible parents of G. mangostana by comparing its relationship to other species within the same section, based on the genetic analysis of the internal spacer, chloroplast and microsatellite regions, and to determine the relationships between the four Garcinia species in the Garcinia section with two other sections and the genus Clusia as an outgroup. Expand
Phylogenetic Relationship of Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) and Several Wild Relatives (Garcinia spp.) Revealed by ITS Sequence Data
TLDR
The phylogenetic relationships among 17 Garcinia species including G. mangostana (mangosteen) were analyzed by comparing sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA). Expand
Morphological variability of apomictic mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) in Indonesia: morphological evidence of natural populations from Sumatra and Java.
TLDR
The results show that mangosteens vary in their morphological appearances, and there are 11 specific characters that can be used to distinguish the apomictic mangosteen. Expand
Assessment of Genetic Diversity in Australian-grown Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) and its Wild Relatives
TLDR
A preliminary survey using a new high-efficiency DNA marker technique, Randomly Amplified DNA Fingerprinting (RAF), is conducted to examine the level of genetic diversity in a population of G. mangostana trees collected from orchards in Northern Queensland, as well as a number of other Garcinia species including mangosteen's closest relative, G. hombroniana. Expand
Genetic variability in apomictic mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) and its close relatives (Garcinia spp.) based on ISSR markers
TLDR
Results supported proposal that G. malaccensis was allopolyploid derivative of mangosteen, and indicated that distribution of the accessions was not linked to their genetic properties. Expand
Historical review and notes on the correct scientific name for seashore mangosteen
TLDR
This study reviews relevant taxonomic literatures accompanied by observation on herbarium specimens to see whether G. hombroniana is a valid taxonomic name to be used since many more species resembling it were used elsewhere and Morphological evidences suggested that there are no clear cut discontinuities in morphological characters. Expand
Genetic diversity revealed in the apomictic fruit species Garcinia mangostana L. (mangosteen)
TLDR
The results show that considerable genetic diversity exists within G. mangostana and between other Garcinia species, and will assist in the conservation of Garciniagermplasm and provides a valuable framework for the genetic improvement of mangosteen. Expand
Phylogeny and Floral Diversity in the Genus Garcinia (Clusiaceae) and Relatives
TLDR
The phylogenies suggest that all species of Garcinia fall into two major lineages, one characterized by the presence of nectariferous floral organs of uncertain derivation, such as central disks, antesepalous lobes, and intrastaminal ring‐shaped disks, and the other by their absence. Expand
PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIPS OF LOCALLY CULTIVATED GARCINIA SPECIES WITH SOME WILD RELATIVES
TLDR
Phylogenetic relationships of five locally cultivated and 12 wild species of Garcinia were determined using the sequence of the internal transcribed spacer region resulting in almost identical tree topology containing five main monophyletic clades. Expand
