In 3G UMTS, two main transport channels have been provided at the layer-2 (MAC) for downlink data transmission: a common FACH channel and a dedicated DCH channel. The performance of TCP in UMTS depends much on the channel switching policy used. In this paper, we first propose and analyze three new basic threshold-based channel switching policies for UMTS that we name as QS (Queue Size), FS (Flow Size) and QSFS (QS & FS combined) policy. These policies significantly improve over a 'modified…

Optimizing mobile terminal equipment for video-medic services
The proposed framework ensures that application specific optimizations for Video-Medic services do not deprive other concurrently executing applications over mobile terminal, as well as ensuring assured QoS for data application in conjunction to live video transmission.

A simulation study of TCP performance over UMTS downlink
A threshold policy to determine which sessions should use the dedicated channels on the UMTS downlink and the performance measures for the threshold and timer based policies are obtained.
Performance Evaluation of Channel Switching Scheme for Packet Data Transmission in Radio Network Controller
This paper proposes some channel switching schemes and evaluates their performance in terms of the packet loss probability and the utilization of dedicated channels by means of simulations.
Differentiation between short and long TCP flows: predictability of the response time
Both simulations and analytical results show that RuN2C has a very beneficial effect on the delay of short flows, while treating large flows as the current TCP implementation does, and it is found that LAS based mechanisms can lead to pathological behavior in extreme cases.

Classifying scheduling policies with respect to higher moments of conditional response time
This work studies the conditional variance in response times seen by jobs of different sizes, and derives metrics appropriate for comparing higher conditional moments of response time across job sizes and finds that cumulant moments should be used.
Classifying scheduling policies with respect to unfairness in an M/GI/1
This paper defines three types of unfairness and demonstrates large classes of scheduling policies that fall into each type and discusses which jobs are the ones being treated unfairly.
Channel type switching in WCDMA
Next generations mobilephone system WCDMA will provide wideband services for file transfers and use of WWW-browsers, and each user can be given two different types of services.
