Abstract In 2004 the first edition of the “Surviving sepsis campaign” guidelines for the management of severe sepsis and septic shock was published, opening a new era in the treatment of this syndrome. The paradox is that the application of these guidelines has produced positive results despite including in some cases the treatments proved ineffective.
