Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a painful, sterile, disorder of the urinary bladder characterised by urgency, frequency, nocturia and pain. IC occurs primarily in women but also in men with recent findings indicating that chronic, abacterial prostatitis may be a variant of this condition. The prevalence of IC has ranged from about 8 - 60 cases/100,000 female patients depending on the population evaluated. About 10% of patients have severe symptoms that are associated with Hunner’s ulcers on…
Treatment Approaches for Painful Bladder Syndrome/Interstitial Cystitis
TLDR
PBS/IC is a disease of unknown aetiology characterised by severe pressure and pain in the bladder area or lower pelvis that is frequently or typically relieved by voiding, along with urgency or frequency of urination in the absence of urinary tract infections.
Diagnosis and Management of Interstitial Cystitis/ Painful Bladder Syndrome.
TLDR
Recent data and current concepts of interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome are discussed and a new nomenclature and classification system is proposed that may prove to be worthwhile pending future studies.
Interstitial cystitis: bladder pain and beyond
TLDR
Oral or intravesical administration of solutions containing sodium hyaluronate, chondroitin sulfate and quercetin to both reduce bladder inflammation and ‘replenish’ the glycosaminoglycan layer should be tried.
Urothelial and Afferent Mechanisms Inducing Bladder Pain in Interstitial Cystitis
TLDR
Although the symptoms of interstitial cystitis are easily confused with those of urinary tract infections, there is an absence of an underlying infection, and antibiotic therapy is of no therapeutic benefit, so the ability to provide effective treatments to patients with this disease will improve.
Interstitial cystitis: an update
TLDR
Among the multitude of oral, intravesical, interventional and complementary treatments suggested few studies have high levels of evidence, newly proposed agents must await further controlled studies.
Bladder Pain Syndrome/Interstitial Cystitis
TLDR
The therapeutic strategy is based on a combined approach to reduce or eliminate the symptoms of BPS/IC, improving quality of life and interfering with the potential disease mechanism.
Painful Bladder Syndrome

The therapeutic strategy is to reduce or eliminate the symptoms of BPS/IC, so improving quality of life and interfering with the potential disease mechanism.

TLDR
Findings suggest that Interstitial cystitis could be a syndrome with neural, immune, and endocrine components, in which activated mast cells play a central role.
Activation of bladder mast cells in interstitial cystitis.
TLDR
Electron microscopy revealed that over 90% of mast cells from IC patients were activated to various degrees, and mast cell activation is a pathologic characteristic for IC.
Results of treatment of refractory interstitial cystitis with intravesical hyaluronic acid.
TLDR
The results of this limited study were satisfactory in the group of responsive patients, who had no relapses during the observation period of 6 months, and the intravesical administration of hyaluronic acid was well tolerated in all cases.
Mast cell activation in sterile bladder and prostate inflammation.
TLDR
The case of a middle-aged man with chronic sterile hematuria, dysuria and lower abdominal pain associated with a high number of bladder and prostate mast cells is reported, implying secretion without exocytosis.
