Recently, together with my colleague Dr Jennifer Clack, (Coates and Clack,1990) I reported the discovery of polydactylous, Devonian tetrapod limbs: the forelimb of Acanthostega (Jarvik, 1952), and the hindlimb of lchthyostega (Jarvik, 1952,1980). These data, and other recent discoveries of early tetrapod material, combine to produce an almost completely new picture of the emergence of terrestrial vertebrate life.
