New daily–persistent headache is a relatively uncommon type of chronic daily headache. The critical features of the original description and the subsequent Silberstein-Lipton description was the onset: daily headache starts abruptly without a background of frequent or worsening headache. A retrospective analysis of the records of 1348 patients regularly treated at the headache clinic of Department of Neurology of Santa Casa de São Paulo, Brazil found that only 21 patients could be diagnosed with new daily-persistent headache (NDPH) according to the International Headache Society (HIS) 2004 criteria.

The diagnosis of NDPH is one of excluding the many secondary types or NDPH mimics, which is especially critical early in the course of the disease when a secondary etiology is more likely.
Dividing NDPH into tension-type and migraine subtypes suggests that NDPH may be merely descriptive and may include different headache disorders such as tensiontype NDPH, migrainous-type NDPh, or secondary NDPH.
