The mechanisms used by the immune system to discriminate between pathogenic and commensal bacteria have remained largely unclear. Recently, we have shown that virulence of Staphylococcus aureus depends on secretion of phenol-soluble modulin (PSM) peptides that disrupt neutrophils at micromolar concentrations.
