The metastable ferromagnetic τ-phase of the Mn-Al-C system has been studied by neutron diffraction to determine the lattice sites occupied by carbon atoms. The data obtained for Mn 0.56 Al 0.44 C 0.018 and Mn 0.56 Al 0.44 C 0.024 samples show that the carbon sublattice is ordered and carbon atoms occupy interstitial sites (1/2, 1/2, 0) in the P4/mmm space group.
