We discuss the impact of the observation of neutrinoless double beta decay on the washout of lepton number in the early universe. Neutrinoless double beta decay can be triggered by a large number of mechanisms that can be encoded in terms of standard model effective operators which violate lepton number by two units. We calculate the contribution of such operators to the rate of neutrinoless double beta decay and correlate it with the washout of lepton number induced by the same operators in…

Short-range neutrinoless double beta decay mechanisms

Neutrinoless double beta decay can significantly help to shed light on the issue of nonzero neutrino mass, as the observation of this lepton-number-violating process would imply that neutrinos are

Flavoured Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

We discuss a mechanism of neutrinoless double beta decay, where neutrinos of different flavours come into play. This is realized by effective flavour-violating scalar interactions. As one

Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay: A Roadmap for Matching Theory to Experiment

The observation of neutrino oscillations and hence non-zero neutrino masses provided a milestone in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. But even though we now know that neutrinos are

TeV-scale Lepton Number Violation: Connecting Leptogenesis, Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay, and Colliders

In the context of TeV-scale lepton number violating (LNV) interactions, we illustrate the interplay between leptogenesis, neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay, and LNV searches at proton-proton

Resonant Leptogenesis, Collider Signals and Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay from Flavor and CP Symmetries

We present a low-scale type-I seesaw scenario with discrete flavor and CP symmetries. This scenario not only explains the measured values of the lepton mixing angles, but also makes predictions for

Probing nonstandard lepton number violating interactions in neutrino oscillations

We discuss lepton number violating processes in the context of long-baseline neutrino oscillations. We summarize and compare neutrino flavor oscillations in quantum mechanics and quantum field

The Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in the Colored Zee-Babu Model

We study the neutrinoless double beta decay in the colored Zee-Babu model. We consider three cases of the colored Zee-Babu model with a leptoquark and a diquark introduced. The neutrino masses are

Analysis of light neutrino exchange and short-range mechanisms in 0νββ decay

Neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) is a crucial test for lepton number violation. Observation of this process would have fundamental implications for neutrino physics, theories beyond

Accessible lepton-number-violating models and negligible neutrino masses

Lepton-number violation (LNV), in general, implies nonzero Majorana masses for the Standard Model neutrinos. Since neutrino masses are very small, for generic candidate models of the physics

A neutrinoless double beta decay master formula from effective field theory

A bstractWe present a master formula describing the neutrinoless-double-beta decay (0νββ) rate induced by lepton-number-violating (LNV) operators up to dimension nine in the Standard Model Effective

Falsifying high-scale baryogenesis with neutrinoless double beta decay and lepton flavor violation

Interactions that manifest themselves as lepton number violating processes at low energies in combination with sphaleron transitions typically erase any preexisting baryon asymmetry of the Universe.

Lepton Number Violation and the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe

Neutrinoless double beta decay, lepton number violating collider processes and the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) are intimately related. In particular, lepton number violating processes at

Neutrinoless double-beta decay and physics beyond the standard model

Neutrinoless double-beta decay is the most powerful tool to probe not only for Majorana neutrino masses but for lepton number violating physics in general. We discuss relations between lepton number

Neutrinoless double beta decay and neutrino mass

The observation of neutrinoless double beta decay (DBD) will have important consequences. First it will signal that lepton number is not conserved and the neutrinos are Majorana particles. Second, it

Survey of lepton number violation via effective operators

We survey 129 lepton number violating effective operators, consistent with the minimal standard model gauge group and particle content, of mass dimension up to and including 11. Upon requiring that

TeV lepton number violation: From neutrinoless double- β decay to the LHC

We analyze the sensitivity of next-generation tonne-scale neutrinoless double-β decay (0νββ) experiments and searches for same-sign di-electrons plus jets at the Large Hadron Collider to TeV scale

Background-free search for neutrinoless double-β decay of 76Ge with GERDA

The potential of an essentially background-free search for neutrinoless double-β decay will facilitate a larger germanium experiment with sensitivity levels that will bring us closer to clarifying whether neutrinos are their own antiparticles.

Pinning down the mechanism of neutrinoless double beta decay with measurements in different nuclei.

It is found that the change in corresponding ratios of half lives varies from 60% for supersymmetric models up to a factor of 5-20 for extra-dimensional and left-right-symmetric mechanisms.

It is necessary that the Universe possess a nonzero value of B\ensuremath{-}L prior to the epoch of fermion-number violation if baryon and lepton asymmetries are to survive.
