Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) is processed in an intracellular secretory pathway, primarily to enable release of ACTH from the pituitary and alpha-MSH from hypothalamic neurons and skin. However, processing is incomplete and unprocessed POMC is secreted from all three tissues.
