Anxiolytic and sedative effects of neuropeptide Y (NPY) are thought to involve inhibition of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). Enhanced secretion of CRH plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of major depression, characterized by sleep disturbances, anxiety and loss of appetite.
