Rat sciatic nerves can be transected and their proximal and distal stumps sutured into the openings of cylindrical silicone chambers. Anatomical regeneration has been demonstrated across 10 mm long chambers containing both stumps, although little or no axonal outgrowth occurs in chambers omitting the distal stump or exceeding the 10 mm length.
