Following partial denervation of rat hindlimb muscle, terminal Schwann cells extend processes from denervated endplates to induce and guide sprouting from the remaining intact axons. Increased neuromuscular activity significantly reduces motor unit enlargement and sprouting during the acute phase of sprouting.
